THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE BECOMING A NURSE

I can’t believe it’s already six years since I got my first license to practice as a registered nurse! How time flies! I remember vividly when I felt rather coerced by my mom to pick up my nursing school admission form. I reluctantly did BUT I’M GLAD I DID!

Some days ago, I was reflecting on how far I’ve come in this nursing profession. I really can’t remember how and why I started reminiscing perhaps I was numbed by cold visiting my clients as a home care nurse. Well, that thought resulted in a video a filmed some days ago on my YouTube channel HERE.

There are so many things I wish I knew before becoming a nurse and I’d like to share some of them with you in this post.

NURSING DEMANDS SACRIFICE: Immediately I started my nursing school in 2010, I quickly realized that for me to get the best grades and knowledge required to practice as a nurse, I needed to sacrifice a lot. I remember staying in school to read during the Christmas period in other to prepare for my then upcoming probation examination in my nursing school in Nigeria. As a nurse, I’ve had to sacrifice my time, social activities, endured unpleasant smells, held my bladder for hours to take care of my clients and most times missed my meals in order to meet the demands of my patients. These sacrifices are character building and life impacting in a rather positive way from my perspective.

YOU CAN’T KNOW IT ALL: As a nursing student, I did my best in burning the midnight candles. I can say I got gratification from reading and when I knew nursing requires just that I went all out for it. Having practised for some years now, I realized that there’s still more to learn and know especially given the fact that nursing knowledge is being updated regularly. As a nurse, I learned to be comfortable with the REALITY that I NEED TO LEARN DAILY AND THAT I CAN’T KNOW IT ALL.

NURSES WEAR SO MANY HATS: It’s funny that before becoming a nurse, I thought all there is to nursing was wearing a sparkling white gown and a well starched and placed cap on your head while you deliver doctors’ orders. Well, my fantasy about nursing suddenly changed as I realized that nurses are and do more than they are being credited or paid for. During my little years of practice in Nigeria and here in Finland, I’ve had to wear so many hats like being a confidant, advocate, adviser, cleaner, listener, mediator, a life or hope giver, a shoulder to cry on and most importantly a crier. Yes, I’ve cried countless number of times seeing my patients go through excruciating pains!

YOUR PATIENTS WILL IMPACT YOUR LIFE: Immediately after my maternity leave SEE MY BIRTH STORY HERE I got a simple but worth reflecting life lessons from one of my clients about gratitude. The lady was super grateful to her son for visiting and bringing a piece of chocolate with him. It taught me to be grateful for the little moments and things life bring on our paths daily. This is one of the many ways my life is being impacted by my clients as a nurse.

NURSING WILL AFFECT YOUR RELATIONSHIP: I wish someone had told me that I would be so tired after long hours of shift in the care setting that all I would crave for was my bed! Some days I get home from work so tired that I all I would want to do is to lie in bed and put my phone on silent mood. Well, the struggle is real for nurses especially when they have little kids to look after.

IT IS OKAY TO MAKE MISTAKES: Nursing has taught me that some mistakes come to you to prevent future mistakes. As a nurse, I’ve a fair share of my mistakes. Thank God they are not life related ones. Since we are humans and bound to make mistakes, one way I prevent mistakes from happening is by double checking with a colleague, getting adequate information about my procedure and asking for help when needed.

I talked about more things I wish I knew before becoming a nurse in this video. They are quite juicy and trust me..fun to listen.

Thoughts about that kitchen waste..STOP THE PROCRASTINATION!!!

THOUGHTS ABOUT THAT KITCHEN WASTE:PROCRASTINATING THAT SOLUTION Hey lovelies!!! It is my first blog and I am so happy to welcome you all to join me in this fabulous journey. I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts and health tips so let's get started. I got inspired by a discussion I had recently about a huge challenge that is hindering us from achieving our schedules and desired goals and I decided to remind us about it and offer a little tip on how to deal with it. Let's start with overcoming the problem of procrastination. Many of us can identify with the problem of procrastination,- those times when you feel something needs to be done but then you postpone it for a more convenient time, until it becomes a nuisance and then you're forced to deal with it but more urgently than you would want to.  We often pay little or no attention to this problem in disguise. I have a good example of this from a very special room in our home which is our kitchen . We may feel l

SHOULD CHRISTIAN WOMEN MAKEUP? TRUE BEAUTY FOR A WOMAN

I've been asked countless times about my stance about women, makeup and beauty. Fortunately, I read from an article online that wrote intelligently about exactly what I believe in and I would love to share it with you all. We live in a society that places a high degree of importance on physical appearance. We see men and women (more women) running to plastic surgeons, having many different kinds of procedures done simply to enhance their appearance. Our society is obsessed with physical beauty, and many women are caught up in that obsession as well. But should beauty really be that important for a woman? Is beauty something that a Christian woman should strive for? What makes a woman truly beautiful? A woman can and should be beautiful—God designed her to be that way. Her skin, hair and other features were created to be soft and appealing, and her body was fashioned to be attractive and beautiful to men. A woman was designed to be attractive, and most women want to be
