The Christian Appearance: Modesty and Beauty

God values our inward beauty infinitely more than our outward appearance. However, modesty in appearance matters a lot in the life of a Christian. Throughout the Bible, God gave laws pertaining to modesty in physical appearance. For instance, He commanded male Israelites to trim the edges their beards, covenant people not to wear tattoos and the high priest was to dress in a certain way. In the New Testament women are commanded to be modest in their apparel.

God’s children should avoid ostentation and extravagance. However, being in good shape, modest and clean is in line with Christian living. Make-ups are accepted as long as they are not extravagant. Generally, the closer to your natural colour, the better.

Our cloths play an important role in our lives. The primary role of cloths in our lives is to protect us from our harsh weather and cover our nakedness. But our cloth does more than these. Our cloth is also a powerful means of communication. Our entire personalities may be understood from our dress pattern. Cloth can be a symbol of gender identity. Dress is a symbol of social identity. The mad man on the street, a king, a banker, a doctor, a policeman, a prostitute may be identified simply by what they wear.

God desires that His children should dress responsibly. Isaiah 52:1 “Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion; Put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city!” (NKJV).

Decide this year to appear modestly but beautifully.
